About Me
I was born and raised in Wichita, KS. As a motivated student undecided in major, I sought a liberal arts education. I attended Hendrix College (Conway, AR) and took many opportunities to explore my interests. I was drawn to psychology as well as social issues; eventually, I saw how psychology could contribute to our understanding of those social issues. I double majored in Psychology and Social Justice (an interdisciplinary major I designed). After spending a summer conducting research (thanks, Dr. Peszka!), I decided to pursue my Ph.D. in psychology.
My initial graduate work at University of Nebraska-Lincoln was on health psychology and stereotyping. My Master's thesis focused on how speaking up about everyday prejudice influences others. During this time, I also had the opportunity to teach courses, and I enjoyed the challenging of teaching! These experiences solidified my interest in a career at a small, liberal arts college. I continued my research on interventions (interpersonal or organizational) to reduce prejudice, and my dissertation examined the long-term effects of confronting prejudice.
Building on my interests in prejudice reduction, I completed post-doctoral work through an NSF ADVANCE grant. I worked with faculty across four campuses in Dayton, OH to address issues for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Given women are under-represented in these fields, I conducted surveys of the workplace climate to identify gender issues, provided and evaluated the impact of training on implicit biases, and implemented an evidence-based campaign. I also evaluated the impacts of these interventions on stereotyping, norms, & attitudes toward women in STEM.
I began work at Adrian College in 2012 and received promotion and tenure in 2018. In addition to teaching classes related to my specialty, I supervise student research. Many students present at professional conferences, including the Midwestern Psychological Association. When I'm not working, I enjoy Netflix binges and exploring local parks and wineries. Besides walking my dog, I stay active by skating with my internationally competitive roller derby team. You can hear more about the intersections between these interests and my professional life in this podcast.
